Another set of shocking statistics have been published by the Dying Matters Coalition which will no doubt make eye-watering reading for Wills and Probate Solicitors up and down the country.
The results reveal that only a third of those asked had made a Will, which makes disappointing reading when you consider that having a Will is one of the most important arrangements a person can make during their lifetime.
Furthermore, it is revealed that a staggering 83% of people feel uncomfortable discussing dying and death, with only 29% of those asked confirming that they had discussed their funeral wishes with their loved ones.
These figures seem to demonstrate a widespread reluctance to plan for our deaths, a view that is echoed by Claire Henry, Chief Executive of the Dying Matters Coalition and the National Council for Palliative Care. She says “Dying is one of life’s few certainties, but many of us appear to be avoiding discussing it or in denial altogether. Talking more openly about dying and planning ahead is in everyone’s interests, as it can help ensure we get our wishes met and make it easier for our loved ones. You only die once, which is why it’s so important to make your wishes known while there’s still time.”
Though it may be uncomfortable, these are topics that simply must be addressed to ensure that our wishes are carried out.
