Porsche Centre Leeds Enters National Competition To Restore Classic Turbo

Motoring

Porsche Centre Leeds has undertaken the challenge of restoring a neglected 33 year old classic Porsche 911 turbo sports car to its former glory as part of a nationwide competition launched by the iconic marque to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the introduction of the first Porsche production car equipped with a turbo engine.

The team at Porsche Centre Leeds was keen to enter the dealership and bodyshop competition launched by Porsche Cars, but struggled to source one of the incredibly rare cars.  A customer, David Graves, offered his 1981 Guards Red, 6 cylinder, horizontally opposed, air cooled rear engine, 3299cc 300bhp Porsche 911 930 Turbo Coupe which had been stored in a disused garage for the last 15 years and is in need of complete restoration.

“We are really excited to have the opportunity to use our specialist restoration skills on such a beautiful and classic model, particularly as the car was originally purchased from JCT600 33 years ago.  Although the vehicle is in a sad condition now, it has huge potential and we are confident it will be as good as new once our renovation is finished in time to enter the competition in September,” explains Ben Mills, service manager at Porsche Centre Leeds.

“The body will soon be sent over to the JCT600 bodyclinic in Bradford where the body shell will be stripped back to bare metal while the team at Porsche Centre Leeds get to work on stripping the engine, gearbox and all the running gear prior to a complete rebuild.  Every part of the car will be inspected, refurbished, repaired or replaced if necessary – this includes the interior trim which currently has holes in it where mice have nibbled the seats!”

Ben concludes: “The competition is a great opportunity to demonstrate our specialist knowledge and wealth of experience in the art of repair, maintenance and care of older Porsche cars.  We’ll be taking lots of photos of the car as the project progresses so that customers can follow a real life restoration as it happens, from arrival and dismantling to assembly and finish.”

The winners of the restoration competition will be announced in October 2014.
