Antiques With Gary DonFeatures

I would like to thank you all for the great response I have had to this valuation section. I do respond to everyone through this column, some items taking a little more research than others but all will be answered when I have the relevant information. Please keep sending them in. You never know what might be discovered!

Dear Richard,

Thank you for your image of your Westminster chiming mantle clock by the Hamburg American Company. It was also known as HAU in Germany from the German company name “Hamberg Amerikanische Uhrenfabrik”.

The company was started in 1883 by Paul Landenburger and became a very well-known German clock company. They used many different trademarks, but the best known is the “crossed arrows” symbol. They eventually merged with Junghans in 1930.

Your clock is valued between £40 – 60.

Dear Mike,

Thank you for your image of your father’s Jack Daniel’s Peterbilt tractor trailer by Matchbox.

As it was only made in 1997, its value has not significantly risen yet. It is possible to buy this model on the internet for between £35 – 45.

Dear John,

Thank you for the images of your dining chair and of your carving.

The chairs are typical of the Edwardian period, and originally there would have been a full set of 4 dining chairs, a ladies chair, a gentleman’s chair and a chaise longue. They reached their peak of popularity in the 1960’s – 70’s, but since then the price has steadily decreased and you would struggle to get £100 for the 4 chairs today.

However programmes such as Downton Abbey are having an effect on fashion and interest in Edwardian furniture.  My advice would be to hold onto them and perhaps the price will rise.

Your second item of the wooden carving looks like a Balinese carving and may have come from the MAS Carving Centre in Bali. They have several craftsmen specialising in this type of carving for the tourist trade and they can be quite expensive. Unfortunately it would probably not fetch a great deal in this country.

Dear Peter,

Thank you for your email regarding the TEAMTALK non-league football publications.

It is good to have the full collection and in such good condition. In its heyday, it was selling up to 17,000 copies per edition but fell to a low of 7000 per edition when it was taken over and re-launched as the “Non-League Magazine”.

I am sure collectors would want to purchase the full collection for investment purposes, or you could be shrewd yourself and hang on to them for the future.

Dear Margaret,

Thank you for the image of your print. Your print is by Edmund Blampied (1885-1966) and is called Homewards, Evening. It is an etching and drypoint, 1913, on wove and signed by the artist.

A copy of this print has recently sold in the USA for £200, where they are far more popular than in this country at the moment.

You may be sat on a treasure trove! It is often the items that you think are worthless that can turn out to be the most valuable.

Not sure? Then send an email to antiques@yorkshirereporter.co.uk. I will answer everyone.

Look forward to valuing for you

Gary Don
