12 Gardens in the lovely village of Barwick in Elmet, Leeds are to be open to the public organised by Barwick in Bloom.Visitors are welcome to leisurely stroll around the gardens, all offering various splendid displays ranging from landscape to small cottage gardens.
For a programme entrance fee of £3.00 per person with all the proceeds raised going to support Barwick in Bloom, it makes a delightful afternoon. Run by volunteers, Barwick in Bloom have proudly achieved Gold for many years for Yorkshire in Bloom and twice in Britain in Bloom under the Large Village Category.
Barwick in Elmet is an interesting and pretty village that was once the manor of the Gascoigne family of Parlington and Lotherton. It boasts the tallest Maypole in England and has ancient earthworks on Hall Tower Field.
Visitors to the open garden event can also view and enjoy the Jubilee Gardens with its wildlife and insect boxes set amongst beautiful white flower displays with herbaceous borders. The Methodist church and All Saints Church- a grade II listed building with Anglo Saxon and Norman stonework are to be opened. The grounds are wonderfully maintained by the volunteers.
Anyone wanting a little walk can visit the recently planted orchard.
Tea and homemade cakes are available to purchase from 1.30pm at the Village Hall which offers a great refreshment break, also there is a selection of plants on offer at reasonable prices.
Car parking is free at Jack Heaps Field located on the Main Street. A Mini bus will be provided throughout the event for visitors with walking difficulties to two of the gardens that are a little further afield at Potterton. For more details on Barwick in Bloom visit barwickinbloom.org
