Bramley and Stanningley remember the fallen this Remembrance Sunday

Local News

Remembrance Sunday commemorations will take place for the first time at the new Bramley War Memorial this week.

Councillors Ted Hanley, Caroline Gruen and Kevin Ritchie (Labour, Bramley & Stanningley) would like to invite everyone to a Service of Remembrance at Bramley War Memorial in Bramley Park this Sunday 9th November.

The service will begin at 10.15am and everyone is welcome to come along to participate in the event. During the service, a Field of Remembrance will be created with over 500 crosses, each bearing a name of an individual member of the armed services from Bramley and Stanningley who gave their lives in the service of their country.

Wreaths will be laid by Leeds West MP Rachel Reeves, Councillors and representatives from Leeds City Council, the Friends of Bramley War Memorial, the Police, Bramley Elderly Action, Barca Leeds and the Bramley History Society. Local Scouts and Guide groups and schools will also be present.

At 11am the Last Post and the Reveille will be played to mark the Act of Remembrance.

The event will be especially poignant due to the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War this year and that this will be the first Remembrance Sunday event to take place at the Bramley War Memorial. The memorial was unveiled on 4th August this year, the day of the centenary, following a campaign led by local Councillors, the Inner West Community Committee and the Friends of Bramley War Memorial.

Councillor Caroline Gruen (Labour, Bramley & Stanningley) said:

“The Bramley War Memorial is a fitting tribute to over 500 Bramley and Stanningley servicemen and women who gave their lives defending our country. I hope many people will come along to give their respects to our fallen war heroes, as they did in their hundreds when the memorial was unveiled in August.”

Norah Gibson (Friends of Bramley War Memorial) said:

“I hope people from Bramley, Stanningley and across the city can join us in showing our respect and gratitude for those who gave their lives in service of their country, in remembering the dreadful cost of war and in praying for peace among the nations.”
