Build A Den Or Climb The Tree House: RSPB Fairburn Ings A Great Family Day Out

Local News

A new and improved play area at RSPB Fairburn Ings, near Castleford, is now open to visitors. The team at the nature reserve have been working hard to create a fun and dynamic space, which now has a den building area. Here, children of all ages can create their own shelter made from natural materials. Plus, there’s a 6 metre high tree house with climbing wall and viewing tower for the more adventurous to enjoy.

The work has been funded by the Caird Peckfield Community Fund (using Landfill Communities Fund monies), and is part of a £43,000 grant to improve the visitor facilities at Fairburn Ings. The first phase of the project paid for work in the reserve’s visitor centre, helping create a welcoming and comfortable environment for families and nature enthusiasts, who can now relax on the sofas and watch the nest box cameras on large television screens.  The second phase of the project has focussed on the play area, extending it and funding new play equipment.

Beki Williams, Visitor Operations Manager at Fairburn Ings said:

“It’s fantastic to see the new improved play area open and lots of families have been making use of the great new additions there. I’ve had a few goes on the tree house myself – the climbing wall is great, and the view from the top is super.”

Beki added: “It has been great working with Caird Peckfield, and we’re really grateful for their help, as the money we have received has allowed us to build on the brilliant work the team here has already been doing, and makes Fairburn Ings a great day out for families.”

The new play area has its own Wildlife Challenge, which families can attempt together and which guides children (and adults!) through exciting tasks. Everyone is encouraged to connect with the natural world along the way, and there is a certificate to pick up at the end.

Fairburn Ings is open 7 days a week, the visitor centre and shop are open from 9 am to 5 pm, selling a wide range of refreshments, gifts, bird food and much more.
