The city of Leeds has once again hit the heights at the annual Britain in Bloom awards.
Held this year in Bristol, Leeds was recognised in the ‘Large City’ group category of the acclaimed awards with a prestigious Gold, but just missed out on the top prize to Sunderland.
It was also a night of celebration for Kippax in Bloom, who walked away with a Silver Gilt in the ’Urban Communities’ category, while one of the city’s most popular green spaces Roundhay Park also earned the Royal Horticultural Society’s ‘Best Public Park’ award.
Leeds has a thriving in bloom network with over 50 groups in communities across the city that contributes to over 1300 floral displays. Last year, as part of Yorkshire in Bloom, Leeds was named as the winner of the ‘Large City’ category, and was also awarded The Yorkshire Rose Chairman’s award which recognises a community that has made outstanding efforts to promote all aspects of the different ‘in bloom’ campaigns.
Councillor Mark Dobson, Leeds City Council’s executive member for cleaner, safer and stronger communities said:
“It was a massive privilege for us to be shortlisted in the Britain in Bloom Large City category, and while we are of course a little disappointed not to win, it is an extremely proud moment to be recognised with a prestigious Gold award.
“We would also like to offer massive congratulations to Kippax in Bloom who earned a fantastic Silver Gilt award and to the staff at Roundhay Park who helped us claim the amazing Royal Horticultural Society’s Public Park Award.
“I would personally like to thank all of our in bloom groups across Leeds, local businesses and our dedicated and skilful Leeds City Council staff from many departments and teams, who do so much, day in day out, to keep our communities looking so great.”
