Good evening Mr Gary Don,
Hope you’re keeping well!
I saw your article in the Yorkshire Reporter and hoped you could give me some information on this old coin I’ve had for some time please.
I look forward to hearing back from you.
Kind regards,
Anita
Dear Anita,
Thank you for your email.
This coin is a reproduction of a Roman Empire sestertius made during the reign of Caligula, with Agrippina Sr, Julia Livilla, and Julia Drusilla (his three sisters) depicted on the back. Caligula is known as a selfish and capricious ruler blamed for weakening the Roman Empire during his brief 4 years reign.
The coin was originally struck in Rome during Caligula reign (circa 37-38 AD).
I can tell that yours is a reproduction due to its fine condition and it also has a modern silver hallmark .925. You can purchase these replicas for under £50.
An original Caligula coin in good condition can sell for several thousand pounds
Looks like it’s back to digging in the garden!
