END OF AN ERA – LEEDS CALEDONIAN SOCIETY

Local News

The Leeds Caledonian Society, which started in 1894, at a meeting in the Queens Hotel, with Leeds-based Scots, sadly closed its doors in 2015 after a long and successful history in the City of Leeds. Membership had dwindled and with no new younger people coming forward to help with the running of events, it was time to take the decision to fold the Society. It was a very successful Society and one of the highlights of its social calendar was the Annual Burns Dinner in January, attended by the Lord Mayor of Leeds. On Wednesday 23rd March 2016 two of the Society’s former Presidents, Mrs. Ena Dixon and Cllr. Barry Anderson presented the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr. Judith Chapman, with the Society’s President’s Badge of Office as a token of appreciation for the support of the Office of the Lord Mayor and citizens of Leeds. The Lord Mayor was also presented with a cheque for £300 from the Society to her charity.
Mrs. Ena Dixon said “In accepting this gift the Society will be remembered in the history of Leeds”.
Cllr. Barry Anderson echoed this sentiment saying “It is very sad that we have had to take this decision but we know that our history will live on with this presentation to the collection of memorabilia that the city treasures.”
