How I live Now by Meg Rosoff

This novel will have you so gripped that you will have no choice but to read it in one sitting. It is the incredible story of how love is strong enough to conquer even war and lead you home. Daisy is a teenager from New York who begins her journey as seemingly selfish and self-centred and evolves through the tale into a strong character who does not give up in the face of adversity. When she travels to England to live with her Aunt and cousins, the last thing she expects to experience is a whirlwind romance but that’s exactly what she gets herself caught up in. When war breaks out and she is separated from everyone she knows except her youngest cousin Piper, will she have the determination it will take to get them back to the paradise in the countryside they call home?

I really loved the way that Rosoff writes and it kept me hooked all the way through the book and was very easy to read. The characters were so well written that you found yourself caring deeply about the family at the heart of the novel and despising the enemy in the war that threatened to destroy them and the beautiful area in which they live. The descriptions took my breath away and it was sometimes incredibly heart-warming to read about the fun that the cousins had while Aunt Penn was away on business. However, some scenes were also quite upsetting but highlighted the danger of the war going on in the novel. I also enjoyed the fact that the author added some mystery into the novel by giving the cousins powers that included being able to communicate with animals and even read peoples thoughts.

With strong romantic themes and the presence of war always looming over the characters I would recommend this novel to people who enjoy stories about love and relationships but also like a sense of danger thrown into the mix as well. It would be best suited to mature teenagers as a result of the way Rosoff describes the relationship that forms between Daisy and Edmond. The only thing that some people may not enjoy is the way the novel is written in a style that may appeal more to a younger audience, however the content probably would not appeal to anyone younger than a teenager. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and loved the end of the book where we got a chance to see how the characters would emerge from the war as almost different people. It is definitely worth a read!
