Local News

The Yorkshire and North East section of the Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM) have secured another three year partnership with Solutions for the Planet, continuing the award winning programme with schools in Bradford and Leeds until 2018.
The co-Director, Kathryn Luckock said, “We’re ecstatic that IGEM are extending their commitment to our programme in Yorkshire, enabling another 4,500+ students to participate, learning about local career opportunities, being inspired to create change in their community and develop vital STEM and enterprise skills for a low carbon future”.
Solutions for the Planet is a STEM and enterprise programme which links schools with businesses in the energy, utility, manufacturing and construction sectors to inspire the next generation. It seeks to tackle the STEM skills gap in the UK and is unique in its focus on sustainability, the circular economy and social entrepreneurship.
Companies like IGEM provide their employees as mentors to student teams throughout the year supporting them to create and develop their innovative products, services and campaigns for positive social and environmental impact. Innovative ideas which businesses can then use within their own operations or new enterprises the students set up.
IGEM CEO Sarb Bajwa added: “IGEM is proud to support such a worthwhile initiative, one which is engaging the next generation to understand how critical science, technology, engineering and maths are to our future.
“As these young people grow up, energy usage, fuel poverty and sustainability are likely to rise ever higher on the agenda, so it’s important that we get the next generation thinking of the solutions now. And we too can learn much from them, tapping into their creative minds and coming up with some big ideas of our own.”
