Investment Club Challenge Showcases Students’ Success

Local News

Four business-savvy final year students have won an annual student virtual investment club challenge, hosted by Leeds Beckett University in partnership with Redmayne-Bentley Stockbrokers.

Economics for Business undergraduates Harry Brayshaw, Ryan Delf, Joe McNulty and Dominic McLennan – made up the winning team in this year’s contest, earning £24,816 on an initial investment of £100,000 over a trading period of six weeks – the equivalent of an annual return of more than 200%.

A total of 84 students across the University’s Faculty of Business and Law (FBL) took part in the challenge during semester one of the current academic year.

Paul Houghton, Leeds Business School lecturer, commented: “The aim is to provide students with an opportunity to more closely understand how the financial markets operate, to gain insight in to a possible future career path and to be more equipped to manage their own financial circumstances.

“Twenty-six teams participated from across a wide range of courses and levels, with an overall impressive performance. This is the fifth year we have partnered with Redmayne-Bentley for the investment club challenge and we’re very grateful for their continued support, and the insight they give our students into the stock market and business world.”

Redmayne-Bentley was established in Leeds in 1875, and is one of the UK’s largest independently owned stockbroking and investment management firms.

Keith Loudon OBE, Redmayne-Bentley’s senior partner, added: “We appreciate being able to work with these enthusiastic young people and their talent and vigour augur well for the future.

“This challenge was set up to help give these young people a feel for the market and has even been given international recognition. We are very proud of this partnership.”

Keith and Dean and Pro-Vice Chancellor of FBL, Professor Chris Prince presented the winning team with certificates and a cheque. The Virtual Investment Club is run and officiated by Redmayne-Bentley’s Lauren Charnley, a former Leeds Beckett University student.
