A Leeds Beckett student has released his debut single and EP after appearing on BBC talent show, The Voice.
Nineteen-year-old Nick Dixon, studying for a BA (Hons) in Music Performance and Production at Leeds Beckett, beat thousands of hopefuls to appear on The Voice in 2013 and 2014, performing in front of celebrity judges Jessie J, Kylie Minogue, Ricky Wilson (also a graduate of Leeds Beckett University), Tom Jones and will.i.am.
Whilst never having made it through to the live rounds, singer/songwriter Nick from Seaton Crew, Hartlepool, said: “Being on The Voice was a fantastic experience. The coaches were very supportive and it really gave me the confidence to keep working on my music career. Tom told me to never give up; and Kylie said she had ‘fallen a little bit in love with me’ after I handed her my business card!”
Nick’s EP, entitled ‘I’m Freakin’ Doin’ It’, which was inspired by will.i.am who said that he admired Nick for being ‘out there’ and ‘freakin' doin' it’ in the music industry, contains five songs, including the single ‘Bored Out of My Mind’, which is loosely based on his TV experience. Nick explained: “'If you are working hard to achieve something you should always try to be creative and never give up on your dreams.
“I have loved being in the studio working on my EP and getting involved with the production side of things. I'm really learning a lot about the music industry at Leeds Beckett University; it's a great place to study popular music and Leeds is a great city for gigging.”
Kenny Jenkins, Course Leader for Music Performance and Production at Leeds Beckett, added: “The BA (Hons) Music Performance and Production degree endeavours to turn fairly raw talent into something equipped to take advantage of opportunities in today’s music industry. Nick Dixon is an unusually gifted singer and songwriter, with an innate pop sensibility. I have no doubt that we will hear a great deal more of him.”
Nick previously attended Hartlepool Sixth Form College and worked on his music as a tutor at performing arts charity Red Dreams.
His debut EP and single are available to download on all major digital platforms.
