Local Breweries Celebrate The Fair Deal For Your Local – “Mulholland’s Law” With Celebratory Beers

Local News

Local breweries, Briscoe’s and Ilkley, have brewed special celebratory beers to toast the historic vote in the House of Commons to deliver a ‘fair deal for your local’, which was led by local MP, Greg Mulholland.

The Fair Deal Victory Golden Ale from Ilkley brewery, the multi-award winning craft brewery in Ilkley, Yorkshire, set up in 2009, was brewed following the sensational victory in the House of Commons, defeating a whipped vote, 284 votes to 269, to give thousands of publicans across the country the market rent only option many have long called for.

Ilkley Brewery kindly supplied Strangers’ Bar of the House of Commons with a cask of the special beer, which was reported as drunk dry in record time by MPs from all parties. The Fair Deal for Your Local campaign, was supported by organisations including CAMRA, Fair Pint, Licensees Supporting Licensees, Unite for Licensees, Justice for Licensees and Punch Tenant Network.

In recognition of Greg’s role in the campaign as Coordinator of the Fair Deal for Your Local campaign and Chair of the Parliamentary Save the Pub Group, “Mulholland’s Law” was brewed up by Briscoe’s Brewery, a unique micro-brewery owned and operated by Dr. Paul Briscoe, a PhD microbiologist who has been brewing beers at home in Otley for 20 years. The unveiling of this special beer took place at the Roebuck pub in Otley, a former rundown Enterprise Inns pub, that has been saved by local businessman Chris Payne and partners, turning it into a thriving freehouse with local beer. The Roebuck was also the location for the Fair Deal for your Local campaign launch back in May 2013, so it is fitting that the celebratory beer was unveiled here.

“Mulholland’s Law” is the nickname for the new law which will come into place following the historic vote in the House of Commons and the Fair Deal for Your Local campaign, led in Parliament by Leeds North West MP and Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Save the Pub Group, Greg Mulholland.

Market rent only is a simple, market based solution what would allow tenants of the large pub companies the right, at rent review or renewal, to ask for an independent assessment of their rent without tie obligations, then have the option to pay this to the pub owning company – or to opt for a fair tied agreement with a lower rent being offered in exchange for higher beer prices.

Commenting, Greg said:

“It is fantastic to have two local breweries brewing up special celebratory beers to toast the historic Fair Deal for Your local victory in the House of Commons.

“A huge thanks to Ilkley Brewery and Biscoe’s Brewery for helping celebrate the sensational victory to deliver a ‘fair deal for your local’, recognising the Fair Deal for Your Local campaign and my role as coordinator.

“The victory of securing “Mulholland’s Law” in parliament is great news for pubs, hardworking pubco publicans and for communities and consumers, who will see many more sustainable pub businesses and a cheaper pint of beer, free from the pubco price escalator”.

Dr. Paul Briscoe, owner of Briscoe’s Brewery, said:

“I am delighted to unveil the specially brewed celebratory beer “Mulholland’s Law” which celebrates the fantastic success of the Fair Deal for Your Local campaign led by the local MP and campaigner, Greg Mulholland.

“The beer is brewed with 3 different malts and is a pale amber, premium bitter with a good hop finish at 4.2%.

“I have supported the Fair Deal Campaign from the start, and it is great that this victory will hopefully give local pubs the opportunity to buy more local beers, which are becoming more and more popular, and be the first stage of the smaller business fight back, which can often not compete with big business.”

Commenting Richard Shelton, Director of Ilkley Brewery said:

“Ilkley Brewery were delighted to provide Greg and the Fair Deal for Your Local campaign with a cask of Fair Deal Victory Golden Ale and were pleased to join them in Strangers’ Bar to toast the historic vote for pubs and for brewers like us.

“Ilkley Brewery, as award winning craft brewers, backed the Fair Deal for Your Local campaign because we want and need much more direct access to pubs, without having to go through pubcos who only pay very low prices, whilst then on-selling our beer to their own licensees at significantly more than we could sell to that pub direct.

“So we toast the Fair Deal for Your Local campaign and the market rent only option, which will make things fairer not only for pubco publicans but also will lead to a more open market, which will be a great thing for us and other brewers who will be able to offer our beer direct to many more pubs”.
