Make The Festive Season Extra Special By Giving An Old Bike A New Home This Christmas

Local News

The general public are being asked to donate old bikes that have been outgrown or long forgotten so that they can be given to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, just in time for Christmas. Leeds-based charity The Works will make sure that all bikes donated are literally recycled, giving them a new lease of life and making them road-ready before passing them on.
Building on the success of the scheme which, when piloted in 2014, saw over 70 bikes donated by the public of Leeds and delivered to selected students at local schools, The Works’ team is hopeful that Leeds residents will once again step forward with their unused cycles, to reach a target of over 100 and ultimately making this Christmas one to remember for dozens more young people across the city.
Bikes of any shape or size that are in a decent or fixable condition are needed and each one will be carefully checked by the skilled team at The Works and then distributed to young people in collaboration with participating schools across the city. Each recipient will also be offered bicycle-maintenance training, as well as free membership to The Works, ensuring that they are able to make the most of their new wheels, with free tuition if needed for anyone whose confidence needs a boost to make them street savvy and road safe.
Elliott Turnbull, CEO of The Works, comments: “The Tour de France had a huge impact on the region, including a legacy plan from Leeds City Council and the Tour de Yorkshire, and we want to keep that momentum going, passing on a love of cycling to the next generation of bike riders.
“We know through experience that there are many disadvantaged young people in Leeds that don’t have bikes, and we are in a position to help. Cycling is a great mode of transport but the health benefits are important too, not to mention increasing self-esteem and participation in sports. Everyone remembers the new found freedom they felt when they first hopped on their own bike and by donating unused bikes languishing in the back of the shed, people are able to sharing that joy with others who, without their generosity, might never experience the same thrill and sense of independence.”
To donate a bike, people should can either call 0113 2446015, email info@theworksskatepark.com or simply drop it off at The Works Skatepark, Kitson Road, Leeds, LS10 1NT.
