Mother And Daughter Complete Their Pirate Adventure!

CharityLocal News

Addi Man and her daughter Athina aged 8 have recently completed their pirates canal adventure to raise funds for the Jane Tomlinson appeal. They travelled the length of the Leeds Liverpool canal paddling nearly 130 miles in a yellow blow up canoe they named Boaty McBoatface!
The pair, from Horsforth set the challenge not only to raise funds but to raise awareness of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. They decided to kayak the length of the Leeds-Liverpool canal because they were hoping to revitalise a place of unique natural beauty and historical significance by reminding people of this national gem. Addi is a big fan of endurance sports and kayaking the longest canal in the UK was an opportunity which allowed Athina to be part of her sporting adventure, inspiring her, having fun together and learning about the world around them.
Team AA as they are known completed the challenge in just 7 days in torrential rain and wind, paddling between 10-13 hours a day and camping along the way. Addi says “The wind kept blowing us back to Liverpool so we had to stop regularly as we were simply paddling to stay on the spot. At times there was more water inside Boaty McBoatface than on the canal! Athina was a great co-pilot! Too little obviously to paddle this large distance but nevertheless an essential part to the success of this journey. She helped me take the boat in and out of the water and to pull it on wheels when crossing the locks, tunnels and low bridges (almost 100 times).”
The mother and daughter team chose the Jane Tomlinson appeal for several reasons. Her determination, resilience and both mental/physical strength were extremely inspiring to many. The pair also like that the appeal helps local Yorkshire charities, and they felt it was important to choose a charity that helps children too. Addi says “We are happy to know that this money will help children with cancer.”
So far, as we went to print the amount raised by Team AA was a fantastic £1421.50! You are still able to donate to this worthy cause at www.justgiving.com/addiandathina
Huge congratulations to Addi and Athina from the whole team at the Yorkshire Reporter on completing such a unique and challenging feat!
