Otley Vintage Transport Extravaganza – Sun 13th Sept

Local NewsMotoring

Otley Vintage Transport Extravaganza provides a great day out for all the family. It all began back in 1996, when the Town Mayor of Otley, Councillor Nigel Francis decided to stage a Transport Rally to raise some funds for his Mayoral Year. It was planned as a once only event and was held in the town centre on the show field.

The show proved to be so popular that it was decided to continue with the event each year and re-locate to a larger area.Councillor Nigel Francis and volunteers organise this interesting and enjoyable day with all the funds raised going to the charity ‘Hang on to a Dream’ the first regional charity in Yorkshire to raise money for terminally and serious ill children to make their dreams come true. Over the years many dreams have been realised and happiness brought to young people. With visits to Football Clubs, Disneyland, helicopter trips, funding provided for specialist computer and audio equipment and much more.

Dream judges each case individually and operates a flexible age policy which means that not only does the charity help young children, but also teens and twenties.

Cllr Nigel Francis said “Many people have asked over the years why we run Hang on to a Dream. The simple answer is that it is something which I wanted to do for many years. There can be nothing worse than to have a child or young person who only has limited time to live. Sometimes I feel tired or struggle to get the Dream together, but when it does all come together and you see the, look on that small person’s face, then it is all worth while.

Nigel continued  “On display this year will be over 500 hundred vintage vehicles, from the smallest pushbike to the largest wagon, steam engines to static engines, tractors and light commercials, motorbikes to motor homes!

Although the vehicles are the main attraction, there will be something for everyone on the day. Fairground organs will play, Punch & Judy will be there for the young and the not so young, West Yorkshire Classic Fire Engines will be there, Charity and Community stalls, food stalls and bands will add to the enjoyment of the day.

For the first time ever we hope to run a full 6 hours of entertainment in the arena. This will include the City of Leeds Pipe band, terrier racing, local singer Leah, gymnastics and even a throwing act! We want people to come down and spend a day enjoying all the entertainment on the field”,

Otley Vintage Transport Extravaganza will take place at Knotford Nook,Pool Road 10 – 4pm.
