Recycled Fashion Helps Homeless

St George’s Crypt’s charity shop on Armley Town Street hosted a fundraising fashion show.

The show was the brainchild of Christine Lane, Retail Sector Manager, and has been months in planning. Using clothes chosen from those donated to St George’s Crypt the volunteers recycled them into five categories ranging from pink to evening wear.

Tailored entertainment was provided on the night by the Caribbean Breeze Steel Band who played many modern classics on the steel drums while singing along. Crypt employee and DJ Jamie Wilson created playlists that complimented each different style shown on the catwalk.

The event consciously moved away from a traditional fashion show using models of all shapes, ages and sizes; most of whom were Crypt clients, staff and volunteers who had never done any kind of modelling before.

Christine Lane, who compered the event, said ‘It was a really good night – we had 72 people turn up when we only thought we’d get 40. It was great to see so many people who have lacked confidence in the past standing up and strutting their stuff! We raised over £700 for St George’s Crypt.’

Gordon Chell, one of the guests, added, ‘It’s amazing to see what people can achieve; one model commented that his estranged aunt had shown up – no-one had expected it and it gave him an amazing boost.’
