Spectacular Setting For Leeds Trinity University’s 50th Celebrations In London

Local News

Musicians, journalists and TV personalities were among the notable alumni joining business partners and friends to celebrate Leeds Trinity University’s 50th Anniversary. Two prestigious celebrations took place in the House of Commons and Westminster Cathedral.
Stuart Andrew, MP for Horsforth, hosted Afternoon Tea for almost 200 people in the Terrace Pavilion, overlooking the River Thames, at the House of Commons.
He said: “I was honoured to host the event at the House of Commons for Leeds Trinity; an institution that has had a real impact in my constituency of Horsforth over the last 50 years. I was delighted to meet alumni, partners and friends of the University, and I look forward to seeing how Leeds Trinity will grow over the next five decades.”
Following Mr Andrew’s welcome, two Leeds Trinity alumni reflected on their time at the institution. Jason McCartney, MP for Colne Valley, and Daniel Copley, Head Teacher at two primary schools in Bradford, engaged guests with stories from Leeds Trinity and reflections on how the institution helped them get to where they are today. Mr Copley was particularly complimentary of Leeds Trinity’s vision of ensuring students are a name, not a number – insisting this is something he now instils in his schools.
Other alumni in attendance included Reverend Kate Bottley from Channel 4’s Gogglebox, Nick Hodgson, formerly of the Kaiser Chiefs and Sky Sports news presenter Vinny O’Connor.
Following the House of Commons reception, guests were invited to join staff and students from Leeds Trinity at a Celebratory Mass in the spectacular setting of Westminster Cathedral.
The Auxiliary Bishop of Westminster, Bishop John Wilson, presided over the service, which also included Leeds Trinity’s Deacon Christopher Stevens and student Servers Matthew Brannen, Sophie Taylor and Fern Tickle. Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret House, Students’ Union President Steph Little, former Principal Dr Mike Coughlan, former lecturer Dan Baldasera and current lecturer Liz McGuire all gave readings throughout the service.
Professor Margaret A House, Vice-Chancellor of Leeds Trinity University, said:
“As part of our 50th Anniversary celebrations, we are keen to involve as many people as possible, and as such, we felt it appropriate to host a celebratory event in London for our alumni, friends and partners based in the south of the country. I would like to thank our local MP, Stuart Andrew, for hosting us at the House of Commons, and Bishop John Wilson for presiding over a Celebratory Mass at Westminster Cathedral – both truly spectacular settings, and certainly, a very grand way to celebrate our 50th Anniversary.”
