Summertime is a noticeably quiet time in the antiques business and our little shop is no exception – we struggle to make enough to pay the rent at this time of year. Since the pandemic and the current financial situation many small businesses have shut down. We are truly fortunate that we have wonderful loyal customers that keep returning, may I take this opportunity to say thank you.
I have recently returned from holiday to Canada where I have five brothers. I of course visited all the antique shops to see what they had in stock – I went into about ten ‘antique’ shops and could not find anything 100 years old which is the definition of an antique! It was explained to me by the shop owners that the country was undeveloped 100 years ago and they have very few antiques from that period because the population was so small and mainly made up of poor immigrants. It is an incredibly beautiful and friendly country and all five of my brothers have thrived there.
My own personal favourites amongst antiques and collectibles are Yorkshire made items of oak furniture, Mouse Man, Rabbit Man, Acorn Man, and various others all superbly made of solid English oak which will last indefinitely if looked after. I collect these items myself, so they seldom appear for sale in my shop.
My interest in antiques started at a very young age. I am incredibly pleased to say I get lots of youngsters in my shop with varied interests in collectables, particularly old coins, it seems that all age groups seem to be interested in money. I like to encourage youngsters to collect different things and invariably either lose money or at best break even with the deals I give them, but these youngsters are the future, and any collecting should be encouraged – surely these interests are better than being glued to a mobile phone or other electronic gadget. I think I am getting old! We love to see unfamiliar faces of any age in the shop so if you have an hour to spare, please call in (it’s not compulsory to buy anything). We particularly welcome children and dogs, and you can park right outside the shop. We are also looking for new stock so please bring in your unwanted items for a free valuation without obligation.
