CharityLocal News

Tesco Express on Easterly Road recently re-opened after being closed for one week in order to refurbish the store and bring it bang up to date. After serving local customers for 10 years, the store closed for a short time to be fitted out with brand new shelving, fridges and freezers, giving it a fresh new look.
To celebrate the re-opening, the store donated two shopping trolleys full of food to St George’s Crypt, which is the local Tesco charity for Leeds. Christine Lane, Training and Engagement Manager for St George’s Crypt attended the opening ceremony along with colleague Darren Smith. She said “Thank you so much to Tesco and their customers for the food that was donated to St. George’s Crypt. We feed up to 100 people every lunch time in addition to the overnight residents. Their donation makes such a difference. It enables us to produce fresh, wholesome and tasty meals for people who need extra help and support. Thank you so very much.”
In addition to the donation to St George’s Crypt, the store held a raffle for customers to win a food hamper with proceeds going to Tesco’s nationally chosen charities of the year Diabetes UK and the British Heart Foundation. The Express store have raised a magnificent £1000 so far this year for the charities.
Megan Senior, Partnership Fundraising Manager for Yorkshire and the North East said “Thank you so much to everyone who has supported Tesco colleagues to reach this fantastic fundraising milestone for Leeds Easterly Road Express. Heart disease and Type 2 diabetes are both serious conditions that can shorten lives. The money raised at Leeds Easterly Road Express will allow us to provide projects across the UK that will help people to live healthier lifestyles and prevent these conditions. By supporting us you have all played a part in helping people live longer, healthier lives.”
Store manager at Tesco Easterly Road Steve Ackroyd is thrilled with the refurbishment saying “We opened in 2006 and the store has now been refurbished in line with the up to date Tesco branding. Thank you to all our loyal customers for being patient during the temporary closure and also for being so generous in helping us to support these worthwhile charities.”
