The Dachshund

Wagging Tales

HISTORY: The Dachshund can be traced back to 15th century Germany. However Dachshund type dogs appear in ancient Egyptian and Mexican art. A shipwreck found in Italy dating back to the 1st century AD also showed that one of its passengers was a Dachshund type dog. The breed standard was set in Germany 1879 and the following year the breed club was established. Originally bred for hunting badgers the dog was called Dachshund, Dachs meaning badgers and Hund – dog, trained to go to ground many were used for rabbiting. They became popular in the 19th century in the UK and America, in the 20th century around the time of WW1 because of their origin this declined. Today the little dogs are part of many families and made welcome throughout both countries.
CLASS: Hound
HEIGHT: Two sizes – Standards 20 – 28cms, miniatures less than 20cms
WEIGHT: Standards 9 – 12kg, miniatures 4.5 – 5kg
LIFESPAN: 12 – 15yrs
COAT: There are three types of coat, smooth, long and wire haired. KC colours are cream, cream dapple, brindle, red, shaded red, silver/tan dapple, chocolate dapple
HEALTH: Can develop spine problems due to their elongated body for some resulting in paralysis, it's essential that there is no running up and down stairs or jumping on and off furniture. Not letting them become overweight and also purchasing from a KC assured breeder who has the full line history helps prevents this and any other genetic problems.
TEMPERAMENT AND EXERCISE: Fair and consistent training is needed and early socialisation as they can be wary of strangers. The wire haired has more terrier in it so generally more mischievous, the long haired is more often calmer and the smooth somewhere in between. Moderate exercise of twenty to forty minutes daily is enjoyed. If you have the time to invest in a dog, these dogs adore attention, show affection, love a lap to sit on and soon become attached and a big part of family life.
?????? OWNER'S VIEWPOINT BY KC ASSURED BREEDER ??????
The Dachshund is the most adorable small dog to own. Totally devoted to its owner to the extent that it will follow you to the ends of the earth if need be. Happy to spend time on your knee but at the slightest chance of disturbance will create. Always happy, NEVER sulks just as long as you are there.
I became a lover of Dachshunds when my husband bought me a 13month old brindle mini long for my birthday. Having bred and shown successfully Bedlington Terriers, Boxers, and labradors it was time to change breeds due to being diagnosed with osteo-arthritis which limited my grooming and exercise regime. I have owned and bred Dachshunds since 2002. A beautiful breed, very loving but also self sufficient. Loves exercise up to 5 miles a day. Grooming paramount in long coats, particularly around the ears, feet and chest which can become entangled. Mini smooths can be dominant and need to be controlled, particularly when you have visitors.
