Walk Of Art

CharityLocal News

Horsforth is soon to be taken over by knitted bunnies, painted wheelie bins and all things creative!

The Walk of Art, a community led creative project takes place on the 4th and 5th July and is open to all who wish to take part. The weekend is made up of community organised activities, exhibitions and performances that take place at various times throughout the village.

The Walk of Art project was organised to celebrate the vast amount of diverse creativity in Horsforth and people from the local community have been working hard to prepare and organise the event. It is fully inclusive and family friendly. One recent family event organised in order to prepare and raise funds was the ‘Crafty Little Tea Party.’ This was a chance for people to drop in and make knitted bunnies, plant flowers in old pairs of shoes, make bunting and also enjoy a chat with tea and cakes.

During ‘Knit and Natter’ sessions that have been taking place, a wonderful Horsforth Blanket has been created from many knitted squares in a wonderful array of colours. The aim for the blanket is that it will be split up and displayed in various locations such as Horsforth Museum and also to create a sensory wall at Penny Field Special School.

As well as the blanket, the knitted bunnies created at the tea party and by other community members are to be used too. All individual, they are to be hidden all over Horsforth ready to be found on the weekend for the ‘Find a Rabbit – Grab It’ hunt. All the rabbits have been given names and a list will be kept of where they have been hidden. A Facebook page will be set up for people to say which rabbit they have found and who is looking after it now! This is a great way to get children and families involved in the Walk of Art.

Children from Penny Field, St Margaret’s and other local schools have also taken part in junk modelling. These models will be on display in shop windows and around Horsforth as part of the Walk.

There will be 4 main themes to the weekend which are:

Shed Galleries – professional artists exhibiting their work in residents’ sheds.

High Street Galleries – Businesses on the high streets will be exhibiting creative work from residents or hosting live art performances throughout the weekend.

Open Gardens – Horsforth In Bloom will be awarding light hearted and creative gardening awards to any participating open gardens.

Live events, workshops and activities – these will be hosted by residents, community groups and businesses.

Along with the community involvement and fun, the group also hope to raise money for charity. Local professional golfer Joe Herrity is going to create a colourful piece of art by hitting golf balls covered in paint at a canvas! This will then be sold with proceeds going to good causes.

Everyone involved is certain that The Walk of Art will be a huge success, and the hope is that it will become a regular 2 yearly event.
