In a brand new combined event, people of Yorkshire are being invited to Walk or Pedal to raise funds for Parkinson’s UK.Both activities start in the grounds of 700-year-old Ripley Castle, near Harrogate, on Sunday 3 July 2016.
Chrissie Fielden, Regional Fundraiser for Parkinson’s UK in Yorkshire and Humberside, explains: “In previous years we’ve hosted a very successful walk and a Pedal event at Ripley Castle but not at the same time. By combining the two, we’ve created a unique event that all the family can take part in.
“People can take part in the walk or the cycle and then meet back at the castle when they’re finished. Why not make a day of it and explore Ripley afterwards – with its famous ice cream shop, café, gift shop, children’s farmyard and art gallery, there really is something for everyone.”
Walk for Parkinson’s offers a 1.5, 3 or 10-mile route, so there is something to suit everybody from those looking for a leisurely stroll to those who would like more of a sturdy challenge.
Keen cyclists can take on a 20-mile blast, 43-mile blaze or 62-mile burn route as they Pedal for Parkinson’s though the county’s beautiful countryside.
Taking part in Pedal for Parkinson’s – Harrogate on the day will be film and TV actor Enzo Cilenti.
Following his father’s diagnosis with Parkinson’s in 2012, Enzo, recently seen in Game of Thrones, has become a keen supporter of Parkinson’s UK, taking part in numerous cycle challenges for the charity. So far he has raised almost £14,000.
Enzo, who is the Champion of Cycling for Parkinson’s UK in 2016, explains: “My father and I like to cycle as much as we can. He finds that exercise like cycling helps him manage his symptoms, so we often go out on a tandem which is a great way to spend time together.
“I know first-hand just how shocking a diagnosis can be, and how people, including my dad, struggle with the condition day to day.
“That’s why I want to encourage as many people as possible to join me to Pedal or Walk for Parkinson’s UK in Harrogate in 2016 – it’s a great way to exercise and raise vital funds at the same time.”
Walk for Parkinson’s costs £10 for adults (£5 for under 16s).
To Pedal for Parkinson’s, the entry fee is £20 for adults (£10 for 11-15 year olds).
There is no minimum sponsorship required to take part in either activity, but the charity suggests cyclists and walkers aim to raise at least £100.
Everyone who signs up will receive a fundraising pack with tips and advice, sponsorship forms plus an exclusive finisher’s medal on the day.
