Yorkshire Dialect Society Shows The Flag!

Local News

At the National Dialect Weekend, held annually in October, this year in Wednesbury in The Black Country, the Eric Topping Trophy for the performance of dialect written by any author, was won by Yorkshire Dialect Society member and Whitkirk lad, Eric Scaife. This trophy, a silver cup, will be held by Eric for twelve months. Next year’s event, now called The National Dialect Festival, will be held in Yorkshire hosted by the YDS, the oldest dialect society in Europe, and will attract representatives from all over the country.
The first national dialect event was the brainchild of Sid Calderbank, a Lancastrian, who had a vision of a national meeting of people interested in the traditional language of their own localities. It has been held for ten years in various counties.
Universities now run courses and encourage research projects into the origins, geographical spread and current usage of dialect. Local newspapers and radio stations have always shown great interest in the event, and last year The Independent newspaper ran a seven page article in its weekend magazine about the event at Rydal Hall in the Lake District.
