Yorkshire Mother And Daughter Breathing New Life Into UK Textile Industry

LifestyleLocal News

Mother and daughter duo Elizabeth and Margaret Beaumont (best known as Rag Makers Ltd) have been delighting International visitors to The Craft Centre and Design Gallery with their selection of recycled woollen cloth goods. Their display met with such popularity that within a week their products had completely sold out and had to be replenished.
A fascinating background story and their traditional Yorkshire looking goods caught the eye of several International visitors; “Our collection of market bags and zipped purses have been inspired by the women in our family who spent their lives working in the rag trade, recycling woollen cloth in Ossett, West Yorkshire. Working with a family run mill based in Huddersfield, we design and make bespoke lengths of woollen cloth using pre-consumer waste yarns sourced from the UK textile industry. We carefully select the yarns, colours and weaves for each length of cloth.

The unpredictable and unrepeatable nature of the yarns used means that the cloth and the products we make from it are one of a handful, if not entirely one of a kind in appearance. We make and finish all of our products by hand in our Holmfirth studio. We are proud to be working with local craftspeople using an environmentally conscious material.”
You can see the work of this talented Yorkshire duo at The Craft Centre and Design Gallery for the next few months and all of their works will be available to buy.
