Antiques With Gary DonFeatures

Dear Gary,

I have an old Popeye Paddle Wagon in yellow, still in its box in excellent condition. It is number 802.

I have heard that old toys are collectable now and wonder what this might make at auction?

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave,

This is a collectable toy and the last one sold at auction for £190.

There is still a good market for toys and we will be holding our online toy auction in December.

Hi Gary,

I have a green frog that came from my grandmother. It has a few little chips on the feet but apart from that it is in good condition. She always thought it was valuable but I was thinking of the charity shop! Just checking first.

Thanks,

Shirley

Hi Shirley and thank you for your enquiry.

This is known as Grotesque pottery made by Burmantofts and it is actually a spoon holder!

The Burmantofts factory was located in the Burmantofts district of Leeds and established in 1845. It was originally the site of a coal mine but when fire clay was discovered, the company began making pottery. They produced decorative bricks and tiles which can still be seen in many buildings around Leeds today. From 1880 they also made art pottery such as vases and decorative domestic items. The firm closed in 1957, but their pottery is still very collectable.

Even with the damage, this unusual item would sell for £220-260 at auction.
