With not long to go until Swimathon 2015, Marie Curie is encouraging people in Leeds to register for the world’s biggest annual fundraising swim. Swimmers are participating in the individual 5k, 2.5k or 1.5k or a team 5k or 1.5k challenges, and with training plans at hand, there’s still time to take on the challenge.

Swimathon 2015 takes place at over 600 pools across the UK from 17-19 April and this year, swimmers are raising funds for Marie Curie. Swimmers in pools across Leeds are getting ready for a last training and fundraising push before their big day.

Barbara Vettoretto who is a member of the East Leeds Marie Curie Volunteer Fundraising Group is taking on the challenge. Barbara said ‘I am really looking forward to taking on the Swimathon, I have enjoyed my training and I am looking forward to taking the plunge for Marie Curie. Taking on the Swimathon challenge has been even more special as it is an activity I can do with my son and going swimming together is a family activity we enjoy.  I am part of the East Leeds Fundraising Group and really enjoy raising money in the local area for Marie Curie, enabling the amazing Marie Curie Nurses to support terminally Ill people in their own homes.

Hannah Saxon Community Fundraiser for West Yorkshire said:  “It’s great to see so many people getting involved in Leeds for this year’s Swimathon and it’s not too late for more to take on the challenge. It’s a great way to get fit for the summer and every length you swim will help raise vital funds for Marie Curie to care for people with a terminal illness and their families in our community.”

Marie Curie helps people and their families living with any terminal illness make the most of the time they have together by delivering expert care, emotional support, research and guidance. Swimathon entries are open until 15 April 2015 and you can still register by visiting Swimathon.org or call 0845 36 700 36.

The East Leeds Fundraising Group are looking for members to support the group in the local area, if you would like to hear more please contact Hannah Saxon on 01274 386190 or email Hannah.Saxon@mariecurie.org.uk
