Diary Of A PawnbrokerFeatures

What a lovely hot summer we have had this year. It’s been as hot as I can ever remember. Now we enter September,  the nights turn darker and the weather cooler and windier, our thoughts begin to turn to Christmas.

‘Too soon’ I hear you say? Not really. We only have bonfire night and X-Factor to occupy us between now and then and with kids back to school and less than 4 months to go, it will be here before you know it. Christmas cards already on sale, pubs are taking Christmas lunch bookings and one even has a tree up already so Brown & Gold in Seacroft or Batley and Christopher Brown Jewellers in York, Pontefract and Shipley should be your next point of call!

We have sourced a stunning new range of diamond and gold jewellery that will make ideal gifts this year with prices that will beat anyone on the high street.

Our range of Rolex is constantly being refreshed and selling well and for those with a lower budget the silver range is stunning and really affordable.

Gold has had a strong summer and we have seen a steady rise in customers wishing to sell their unwanted jewellery. Prices are still high and with our busiest time fast approaching; we are actively looking for good quality pre-owned jewellery and diamond pieces so call in to your nearest branch for an instant evaluation.

The pawnbroking arm of the business has remained steady throughout. We expect to see a peak in the late Autumn and at present it’s the ‘back to school’ mums and dads who are topping up their reserves to pay for new school kit and outstanding credit card bills from entertaining their family for the last 8 weeks. We have also had a large number of Asian jewellery loans, mainly to fund the Asian wedding season. Many regular customers borrow large sums against their 21ct and 22ct gold jewellery to fund the generous gifts of cash, gold and lavish celebrations that surround such an event. All our loans are 100% confidential and the contract length of up to 7 months allows part payments, giving customers the opportunity to reduce their loan value as, and when, they can afford it. Summer really can be an expensive time!

One area of our business that is always busy but often overlooked is our Buy-Back service on phones, games consoles and electricals. As I wrote this article the festival season was well underway and hundreds of young adults were queuing up in Seacroft to attend the Leeds Festival. Every single one of them owns a mobile phone worth hundreds of pounds and very few of them are interested in buying any jewellery from our windows!

This ‘technical generation’ love to plough their money into partying, playing ‘Fortnite’ and owning the latest mobile. However they are as much in need of finance as the rest of us and the opportunity to trade your phone or better still, just use it to borrow some short term cash is the perfect solution to their everyday cash-flow needs. We don’t just sell jewellery, we offer a whole lot more to help with your finances so even if you are looking for a new phone or an X-Box One this Christmas, pop in and ask us first as there are some real bargains available.

Sapphire is the birthstone for September and what could be better than to treat your loved one to a stunning piece of jewellery to mark the occasion. In fact ancient civilisations believed the world was built on a giant sapphire and it was its reflection that made the sky and sea so blue. It was believed that the sapphire brought wisdom, hope and faith and was a symbol of power, strength and wise judgement.  You don’t you have to spend the earth to afford one though and we have beautiful range of sapphire and coloured stone jewellery on offer with some amazing half price manager’s specials so call in to your nearest branch and have the perfect start your Christmas shopping!

Christopher Brown Jewellers branches now in York, Pontefract, Shipley and Liverpool.

Brown & Gold branches are in Seacroft, Batley, Prescot and Toxteth
