Shine Bright Like A Diamond

Diary Of A PawnbrokerFeatures

“Jewellery has the power to be the one little thing that makes you feel unique.” So said Elizabeth Taylor who understood the joy of a big shiny rock better than anyone else.

At Christopher Brown Jewellers we specialise in our gemstone collection and we retail a range of stunning diamond jewellery at amazing prices.

However last week the UK has announced a ban on Russian diamonds as it tightens sanctions over Russia’s war in Ukraine.

As a result many customers have been asking whether the ban on the import of Russian diamonds will have an impact on high-street prices. In essence there should be very little change as diamonds have already experienced a global increase in value back in 2022 when the war first began. Furthermore at Christopher Brown Jewellers, our diamonds are carefully sourced directly from our wholesale cutting partners and we also offer an extensive range of pre-owned jewellery at incredible value. We will therefore ensure that our prices will remain unaffected and be the outstanding value you have come to expect from Christopher Brown jewellers.

Nevertheless, Russia is the world’s biggest diamond exporter by volume, followed by the African countries. A state-owned company called Alrosa dominates Russian diamond mining – and it mined almost a third of the world’s diamonds in 2021.

However, the world’s diamond trade is complex, and diamonds can change hands 20 to 30 times between mine and market with many of the Russian diamonds ending up in India where there is a major cutting and polishing industry. Traders grade the stones for carat (weight), colour, clarity and cut – with different traders looking for different attributes. They then take the remaining gemstones, mix them up, and sell them on – and the process is repeated. The UK ban on Russian diamonds will have little effect overall though as the UK makes up less than 1% of the global diamond trade.

At Christopher Brown Jewellers, we buy the finest loose stones directly from our global wholesale partners, cutting out the middlemen and enabling us to offer incredible prices on quality diamond jewellery that would otherwise cost the customer so much more. Our reputation as a supplier of fine stones has increased each year and we often find customers travelling from all parts of the country to visit our store at High Ousegate in York and Christopher Brown stores in Seacroft, Pontefract, Shipley, Stockport, Prescot and new store in Goole, knowing that our prices are very fair and the quality and service are excellent.
